With all the talk about the Oklahoma City Bombing today I had to dig into my archives for some old images that came to mind…

In 2001 my brother and I visited the site of the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing.  On that trip I was shooting a grainy black and white tri-x i believe, maybe it was an Ilford film, not sure.  These images were scanned from the proof prints.  I would like to revisit the original negatives some day and see what kind of detail I could bring out.

Although the graininess in these seems to fit the somber mood of the memorial and the images make me think of old newsprint so maybe I should just leave them as they are.

Saturday morning I grabbed Laura, packed my gear and headed off to an abandoned warehouse in a dirty little part of Portland, down by the river, by the tracks, to a location I had been notified about a couple of hours earlier.  We found the location, parked outside and entered the building through a nondescript door to be met by a man with a list.  I was on that list so, after paying a small fee, we were allowed to enter the abandoned building to find a group of about 40 in a dark, broken hallway, going over the rules for the day.  I was assigned to group 2 before splitting off and climbing a staircase to the second floor where we met with our MUAs and first set of models.  From that point on it was, well… it was On.

We shot various models over the course of the afternoon in different parts of the abandoned warehouse.  We used different lighting setups and collaborated with each other on the images we wanted to make.  It was actually a little bit intense, with a lot of action going on in different parts of the building and everyone scrambling for time.  The models worked amazingly hard.  The MUAs rocked the look.  The photographers did their thing and we prevailed.  We packed up our gear after 4 models and headed off to another job.

Here are my results (click on images for enlarge).

Haiti 1985I traveled to Haiti in 1985 with my local church.  Our mission was to help refurbish a school while participating in cross cultural experiences with the Haitian people.  We arrived in Port-au-Prince to an eye opening scenario.  Having traveled from tony Short Hills, NJ to the other side of the world, metaphorically if not literally, struck a deep cord inside me.  The people that we met while in Haiti taught me more in a week than I had learned in years.  What an experience.

Since the earthquake I have heard that the school we worked on no longer exists.  I look back at my photographs of the children and think how they would all be grown up now, with families of their own, all of whom were certainly highly impacted by the recent destruction.  It tears at my heart to think of all those faces, and where they are at today.

What I saw in 1985 were a determined people living under unimaginable conditions.  But the people were happy, and that has always stayed with me.  For all that they did not have, they were happy, and beautiful.  I know that that same determination I witnessed in 1985 still holds strong in Haiti today.  Helping the Haitian people is different than helping people in the US.  The Haitian people do so much with so little.  They persevere and they thrive with what they have.  Right now they do not have a lot, but hopefully that will change with aid arriving daily from organizations who know how to help.  One of these organizations that I am familiar with is Burners Without Borders.  They have been getting aid into the country through the extraordinary measures of ordinary citizens.  I like these people.  Please donate to Burners Without Borders today so that can continue to make a real difference on the ground in Haiti.

Here are some of the images I captured this morning at sunrise.  I chased the light around for hours, not really in sync but close.  I did find a couple of spots I want to shoot from some other time.  So it was a successful outing.  It almost always seems to be.  :-)
