While I was making breakfast this morning Laura was monkeying around, making this excellent JibJab video staring yours truly.  Brothers A, J & C play the monsters.  Cracking me up.

You have to get up early to catch perfect light.  Today was one of those days.  Early rise, hike with gear, get the shot.  Sunrise at Union Station in Portland.

When asked what I love about Portland, my answer is simple.  It’s The People.  Portland has attracted individuals from across the globe.  On the streets and in the restaurants, you will find a melting pot of global style.  From business suits to artist chic, from couture to diy fashion. There is no one look.  There is no consistent style by occupation. There are only individuals.  For me, what I love so much about Portland are the people.  The people are what make Portland special. The people are Portland.  I choose to photograph the people of Portland.  This is my work.  This is my passion.  Let me photograph you.

I want to photograph you.  Seriously.  -Hov.

I got picked up for another background extra role, a Fashion Buyer on the new TNT television series Leverage.  We were in Eastern Oregon over the weekend and didn’t get a lot of sleep.  This continued today with my 4am wake-up alarm calling me to be on set by 5:30am.  I made it to the lot and began the regular rigamarole of signing paperwork, going to wardrobe, eating from CRAFT Services, and waiting to be called to the set.  Be on time and be ready to wait.  That is what it is like to be an extra.

We were working out of a warehouse near our photography studio so the location wasn’t far from home.  I whizzed through wardrobe wearing hip and trendy threads from our personal collection and they dug my signature glasses.  I was set, to sit.

We waited for a while as they dialed in the set, then we were called and placed into the scene.  I pay attention and work hard, which isn’t easy when you are running on 3 hours sleep and the day goes for 14 hours.  I usually get paid off by being “used well.”  For Leverage, I was placed in front of a fashion show banner, behind a red velvet rope.  The scene opens on me getting mobbed by photographers before tracking to the stars, who enter the scene for their dialogue. I get to come up from behind them and continue on into the scene.  This scene was shot many times from different angles.  It is important to do the exact same thing each time to maintain continuity for the editors and I am pretty good at continuity.  The other scene has me inside the fashion show, a few feet from the primary actors.  We again do many takes from different angles in order to give the editors plenty of footage to work with.

The day ends around 7pm and I am worked.  It was a tough one but a lot of fun as well.

Look for me on episode 9, Leverage, Wednesdays on TNT.

What a week.  I have been sneaking in 3-4 hours of sleep a night for a good run now.  I can hear the inevitable crash just on my heels.  I can outrun it.

We started off with RENT on Sunday night.  A beautiful date night and a welcome break from the chaos of work and home.  We had fabulous box seats, the show was spectacular and I was hella happy Laura got the tickets months ago.  We really enjoy taking in local arts whenever possible.  It’s inspirational and a crucial element of our sanity solution.

Brother Chris flew into town Tuesday to spend some time helping with metal fabrication for our art car.  We had a 12 hour day at the shop in the blazing sun but made fantastic progress on our mutant vehicle modifications.  A big thank you to Forgewerks, Andy, Dex and a host of others who gave input and a helping hand.  A big shout out to the City of Portland employee who gave me a jump start when I was stranded in the heat with art car and trailer in tow.

We had a couple of photo sittings and client meetings, we booked work and mailed prints, and we had post production on almost 2,000 images this week (see our Hood River Super D photos here).  We also had our first joint art opening Thursday evening.  What a great night down at Leepin Lizards for First Thursday.  Laura and I are showing prints from Burning Man 1999-Present for the months of July and August at the salon on NW 21st.  We saw lots of old friends and made many new ones.  Thank you to everyone who came down and shared a story and glass of wine.  Afterward we went to Le HAPPY with a small group of friends to celebrate.  Yum.

Daily care for a friend and late night dog walks rounded out our busy schedule this week.  Oh, and we are throwing a big shin-dig for the 4th of July so prep for that has been squeezed in between the lines.
